Book review The inner game of work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Book review The inner game of work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog I discovered Inner Skiing about 15 years ago, and enjoyed it immensely. That book describes how the inner game principles pioneered by Timothy Gallwey can be used to create better learning conditions for skiers. Gallwey originally used it for teaching tennis, and the method basically consists of teaching not by telling people what to do, but simply by helping them direct their attention to different aspects of what they want to learn. In this book, subtitled Overcoming mental obstacles for maximum performance, Timothy Gallwey applies the same principles to work. How can we create the best learning conditions at work and what advantages would this give us? To take the last question first, the advantages would be immense. If we were consistently were able to apply ourselves totally to what we do at work, and to always learn from it well the sky would be the limit. So how do we do it? In the book Gallwey describes both the idea and theory behind the inner game, and some methods to apply it in real life. The theory is logical and positive. The methods are simple, clearly described and can be used by anyone. Through many stories, Gallwey shows how the theory and methods can be applied in many different contexts, like sales, coaching, leadership, training, teaching and even parenting. Stories of hes worked for companies like ATT and Coca-Cola give him a lot of credibility, and its obvious that hes a man of great insight and personal integrity. The greatest insight is to reframe everything as learning and to emphasize learning over performance. As an example, do not try hard to make the sale on your next sales call. In stead focus on some important key parameter, say the customers level of interest, without trying to affect it just notice it. While your conscious mind (what Gallwey calls the self 1) is busy monitoring this, your subconsious mind (or self 2) is free to do much better and to learn much more. My favourite example in the book, is the one where Gallwey uses the methods to coach a tuba player in a symphony orchestra. Now, Gallwey has absolutely no idea of how to play the tuba, but simply by asking 4 or 5 well placed questions, he directs the tuba players attention in a way that gives the man such a breakthrough in his playing, that the entire orchestre gives him a standing ovation. The book is entertaining, well structured and highly informative, and the books message is clear, useful and very positive. I recommend it to anyone interested in learning, coaching, leadership or personal development. Thanks for visiting my blog. What To Include In Your Cover Letter

What To Include In Your Cover Letter If you are applying for a job vacancy, then it makes sense that you will want to give yourself the best possible chance of being successful. Whether you are looking for a job because you are unemployed or you simply want to climb up the job ladder, it stands to reason that you will be passionate about getting the job. It is easy to get carried away with concentrating on your resume and making sure this is up to scratch but that isn’t the only direction your concentration and efforts should be pointed. Your resume is very important, however, you also need to bear in mind that often the cover letter that you send is the first impression potential employers will get of you. It is reading this letter that will help them decide whether or not to read your resume. This means that you need to pay careful attention to your cover letter with regards both the content of it and the layout in order to create the right impression. The first thing that you need to include in your letter is your contact information. If they are interested in you and what you have to say, they don’t want to waste time trying to hunt out how to get in touch with you you need to make this clear and easy to find. When you are starting your letter always ensure that the salutation includes the name of the person recruiting if you know it as this is bound to get you brownie points. When it comes to the main content of your letter you need to let the person reading it know what the position is that you are applying for and why they should employ you above anyone else applying. Close your cover letter professionally inviting them to contact you if they need any further information and letting them know that you look forward to hearing from them soon.

Is the Word Degree Capitalized Resume Writing Important?

Is the Word Degree Capitalized Resume Writing Important? Is the word degree capitalized resume writing still important? After more than 50 years of college students graduating from colleges, I believe this is still a serious question. Do you think the word degree capitalized resume writing has become redundant? When I was a college student in the early 1960s, I was taught that the only way to tell if the student would be a good teacher was to give them a job. Since so many careers in that time were dictated by the word degree, this would make sense.Though the education system has evolved since then, the term itself has not. Is the word degree capitalized resume writing important to you?Why would someone get a job through a job fair if it means that they were passed over? I believe that the term 'degree' is still meaningful because of the stereotype that was developed. Today, there are several degrees that would qualify the applicant to get the job that they wanted. Getting a job in col lege through a 'degree' is not something that should be taken lightly. Is the word degree capitalized resume writing important to you? If a job can be obtained without a four-year degree, does it make any sense? For example, a college graduate who doesn't have any college degrees will do well in an entry-level job or position. However, if the person has more than a few college degrees, the likelihood of not being hired would increase. What about being hired because of the number of years that an applicant has worked? Has that person been sitting around waiting for their chance? The typical resume will not give that information. One of the things that make a college student's resume so special is that they can list their special achievements with a little help from a resume editor. The career bible, 'The College Solution,' describes the applicant's job as 'waiting' for an opportunity to go out and 'take a chance.' Of course, the secret is in the resume. The resume is a powerful tool in your search for a job or promotion, whether the resume is the word degree capitalized resume writing or not.

How Much Do Librarians Make

How Much Do Librarians Make Financially savvy individuals know better than to dive headfirst into a dying industry. When a job breathes its last breath, employees will be left scrambling to locate a new job that utilizes the same skills and pays around the same amount. A few years ago with the rise of digital media, I wondered what would happen to all the libraries. I imagined buildings abandoned, shelves empty, save for the occasional battered book, and everything covered in layers of dust. However, libraries aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. And librarians and library assistants are still relatively stable career prospects. Here’s why. 1. Salary According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, library technicians and assistants earned a median wage of $13.43 an hour in 2015. And even the library assistants who were paid the lowest in the industry averaged around $9.34 an hour. If you pursue a library assistant job, chances are you will be paid above the federal minimum wage. When you throw in the fact that the job doesn’t require you to invest in an expensive college degree, it’s a pretty solid employment opportunity. The only downside is that a lot of the job opportunities are currently part-time, but that applies to a lot of jobs that don’t require a college degree. This job can be a steppingstone to a far more lucrative librarian job. Librarians earned an average of $27.35 an hour in 2015. That’s an annual salary of around $56,880. Even the lowest paid jobs within the industry paid an annual salary of around $33,810. The only downside is that to become a librarian, individuals will need to earn an undergraduate degree and a masters in library science. Read More: This Interview Technique Will Get You Hired 2. Upward Job Prospect Trend Sure, electronic media has hurt the librarian profession, but it’s not severely wounded. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for librarians and library technicians and assistants will continue to increase. The job outlook from 2014 to 2016 for librarians is expected to increase by 2%. And library technician and assistant positions will increase by 5%. The fact that the industry continues to experience growth, even if it’s slow growth, is a good sign. Read More: Book review: Reinventing Collapse 3. Libraries Are Proactively Changing Public libraries have been making major changes to remain relevant in an increasingly digital world. Here are some of those changes: Offering movie rentals Renting board and video games Renting meeting rooms to businesses Offering power tool rentals Renting musical instruments Offering free Wi-Fi Providing access to 3D printers Giving out free seeds to plant Providing computer and tech classes 4. Even Federal Funding Cuts Can’t Keep Them Down Yes, libraries are facing federal budget cuts this year, but it won’t decimate the ability of libraries to function and continuing to operate. According to the Huffington Post, during economic downturns when libraries don’t receive as much federal or state funding, local communities have a pretty good track record of stepping in to save public libraries. When they can’t cover operating costs, 87% of communities supported measures to grant their libraries the funding necessary to remain open. Read More: 5 Easiest Ways to Score Free eBooks 5. Broad Range of Librarian Jobs The employment opportunities for librarians are far more expansive than gigs at small public libraries and schools. Larger libraries often allow individuals to really specialize in a specific skill set. User service librarians aid individuals in navigating the library and finding material to conduct research. Technical service librarians obtain, prepare, and organize library materials. Administrative services librarians are focused on the more business-oriented aspects of the library (staffing, budgets, library material contracts, and fundraising). Librarians can also work in nontraditional librarian jobs. Corporate librarians are hired by private businesses (insurance companies, consulting firms, and publishing companies) to assist employees as they conduct research. Government librarians assist government staff. Law librarians work in law school libraries and law firms. They organize legal resources and aid lawyers, law students, judges and law clerks with their research. Medical librarians help health professionals, patients, and researchers find health-related information. They teach medical students how to find information and answer consumer health questions. Libraries and librarians have continually fought to remain relevant as technology has rapidly changed. Due to the hard work of librarians, library organizations, and many others, library based careers are still a lucrative career choice.

Executive recruiters and hiring managers navigate through hundreds of resumes for each job posting. Ensuring that your resume stands out from the stack and captures the attention of HR executives is the first step to securing an interview in the hiring process. Its worth repeating that hieroglyphics, 72-point font and pressed flowers do not an appealing resume make.Listed below are five ways to effectively tailor and enhance your resume to stand out in a competitive market.Avoid the first person pronoun. Since your resume is about your person, pronouns such as I or me should not be included.Instead of I conducted financial, compliance, information system, and operational audits resulting in im proved controls and operating efficiencies. Use Conducted financial, compliance, information system, and operational audits resulting in improved controls and operating efficiencies. Use effective job titles and keywords. Companies are using digital databases more frequently to search for candidates, running queries based on specific keywords related to the job description.Optimize your resume with keywords and phrases that reflect the skills and experience required for the type of position you are targeting. In the same manner you search for jobs using specific keywords, employers are using keywords to find your resume.Provide detailed software application experience. The value of including a Software Skills section is often overlooked, especially in the accounting and finance industries. Companies place a heavy premium on business intelligence therefore it is of utmost importance to list software proficiencies on your resume. For example SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks, Microsoft Dynamics , Crystal Reports, and how you have utilized each of these systems.Include education credentials and academic honors. List your degree, major and GPA, if with distinction. As your career progresses, college GPA becomes less relevant. List minors or second majors on your resume as it provides further insight into your educational background.Do not include personal views and opinions. References to political and religious affiliations, extracurricular activities, sexual orientation, or opinions that are possible targets of discrimination should be omitted. It is illegal for employers to ask for this information and irrelevant to whether you are a strong candidate for the position. As an Accounting and Finance recruiter who reviews and evaluates resumes on a consistent basis, I would like to hear the strategies you have found successful in elevating your resume into the hands of hiring executives.
